Sleep, Incontinence and General Health and Well-Being

Everyone must sleep –we have to restore and heal our bodies. It’s the natural and most perfect way to restore health, recover from illnesses, forget about a bad day, ease all the aches and pains, worries stresses and wounds inflicted upon us during the day just gone. In fact babies grow and develop when they sleep at a remarkable rate. Sleep is the ultimate restorative medicine we all must have.

In short it’s the greatest healer to reenergise ourselves.

There are some people who claim they don’t need much sleep, surviving on minimal sleep of a couple of hours a night. Winston Churchill was one of those but he also napped in the afternoon for at least an hour if not longer, but slept only the minimum time at night. Some people can, but the majority of us need a good 7-8 hours’ sleep each night to function properly regardless of age.

Unfortunately many people who do not sleep deeply and effectively often suffer a range of medical and psychological and emotional problems. And the longer poor quality sleep is tolerated the worse these conditions become and are exacerbated by age, obesity, stress, and disease. The range of complications from lack of sleep is wide and can be profoundly affecting to it's victims.

Many people with frequent urination issues are deprived of good healthy sleep. Those first few critical hours of the really deep sleep, so beneficial to health is frequently interrupted by visits to the toilet which ultimately impact on the individuals health.

About 20% of people over the age of 18 who have an overactive bladder suffer poor sleep. This kind of upsetting incident can become a regular occurrence. Even if they make it to the bathroom in time, they wake up so often to urinate that they aren’t getting a good night’s sleep.

Nocturia is common in men and women. Often not related to weak pelvic muscles but the act of lying down in bed can promote the production of urine which requires the victim to visit the toilet several times a night.

Generally, the amount of urine in our bodies decreases and becomes more concentrated at night, so we can sleep six or eight hours without having to get up to use the bathroom more than once, but those with frequent urination are deprived of good natural deep sleep.

The effects on those affected eventually take its toll with the individual becoming extremely overtired and things can easily get out of hand from there.

The thing is to do something about it and generally each of us can.

Things you can do

If you have nocturia see a doctor. There are now patches that can be worn to reduce the production of urine at night.

  • Kegel Exercises are still the best defense against incontinence
  • If you have nocturia elevate your legs slightly at night with a pillow to slow production and ensure you squeeze out every drop at the toilet just before getting into bed. Also avoid liquids 2 hours before you go to bed.
  • Wear a good diaper –Hey! You must have good sleep! besides no-one sees.
  • Lose weight if you are overweight it will help improve your condition and enable you to sleep better as well.
  • Exercise is a great narcotic before going to bed.
  • If you are stressed change jobs –go somewhere where there is not so much pressure on you. Do you really have to have this job? Really ?
  • Learn as much as you can about what it is you have and don't just take your doctors advice-knowledge is power to you. I'm sure your GP has your interests at heart ,but if he is seeing 30-50-70 patients a day -does he have the time to resolve all their problems? You know your body better than anyone else-learn and deal with the issue for you!
