Fibromyalgia used to be called fibrositis. The word means inflammation of the of muscle and connective tissue in the body.

It is characterised by widespread, chronic pain and a heightened pain in nonspecific areas of the body with low pain pressure threshold. Fibromyalgia symptoms are not restricted to pain and may include other symptoms like fatigue, restless sleep, stiff joints, difficulty swallowing, bowel and bladder issue, numbness, tingling sensation, cognitive dysfunction, depression, anxiety, stress-related disorders such as post traumatic stress and irritable bowel syndrome,(often linked to endometriosis and fibromyalgia).

Female to male incidence ratio of approximately 9:1.

There is currently no known cure for fibromyalgia.

There is an interesting correlation between several medical conditions and fibromyalgia

  • 49% of fibromyalgia patients also have IBS(irritable bowel syndrome)
  • 51% of chronic fatigue syndrome occurs in IBS patients
  • 94% psychiatric disorders were found in IBS patients.
  • 87% of IBS patients undergo abdominal and pelvic surgery.
  • IBS patients were three times more likely to undergo gallbladder surgery unnecessarily.
  • IBS patients have hysterectomies twice as many as normal.
  • IBS is reported to have a significant link between endometriosis and migraine headaches.

Chronic Inflammation

Chronic inflammation as opposed to acute or short term inflammation in the body can cause secondary inflammation so it becomes a condition where more inflammation is created in response to an existing inflamed condition in any part of the body.

Inflammation can occur when a stimulating event like trauma from physical, emotional, chemical or food origin provokes components within cells to express genetic code.

This secondary inflammation produces pro- inflammatory proteins, chemical messengers called cytokines.

Cytokines are responsible for the immune system operating to defend the body, but when the immune system is turned on for extended periods of time it may not function correctly and lead to hormone, neurotransmitter and cellular dysfunction.

Chronic over production of cytokines can induce symptoms, such as: fatigue, fever, sleep, pain, and muscle pain, all of which develop in fibromyalgia patients.

And these symptoms can be what fibromyalgia patient’s experience.

Clinical Studies

Clinical studies have produced evidence fibromyalgia is associated with the immune system’s improper regulation of pro-inflammatory cytokines that circulate in the bloodstream which contribute to the dysfunction of the central nervous system and pain-related neurotransmitters.

These changes are actually visible in blood tests and biopsies of fibromyalgia patients and also show the mitochondria of many cells in the body have impaired function in many fibromyalgia patients. The mitochondria are like little engines in each cell which convert glucose to energy.

The most common deficiencies observed in fibromyalgia patients include: magnesium, 5-HTP ,( a naturally ocurring amino acid and a precursor to the neurotransmitter, serotonin) and vitamin D. D-ribose and acetyl-L-carnitine play major roles in mitochondrial function.Magnesium is critical for cell function and many fibromyalgia patients have been found deficient in magnesium.

The common symptom with fibromyalgia and irritable bowel syndrome and chronic fatigue syndrome and endometriosis is chronic inflammation –inflammation that has caused the immune system to over produce cytokines to correct an inflamed condition in the body bought about by trauma from physical, emotional, chemical or food origin which causes inflammation.

Prescribed medications

To mitigate pain anticonvulsant drugs, analgesics, opioids and anti-depressants have been used with positive results to fibromyalgia patients, but tend to carry side effects.

Supplemental Treatments

The goal of treatment of fibromyalgia is to lower the inflammation in the body and stop the cycle from repeating itself .There are several steps which have proven very effective in treatment of the disease.

This treatment has worked for a large number of people with fibromyalgia so you may like to consider it:

1. Change lifestyle to try lower stress and anxiety on a day to day basis. Exercise or walking for 30 minutes a day will help this.

2. Try to get a good night’s sleep-go for a walk before bed time –avoid coffee and tea 2 hours before hand.

3. Eat a balanced diet-3 veges, chicken, fish, meat (not too much meat), and 2 fruits a day-avoid cereals for breakfast.

4. Avoid alcohol for at least a month and drink clean water.

5. Try taking an anti –inflammatory enzyme. Serrapeptase/Curcumin –called Serranol has had some impressive results with IBS and fibromyalgia. Out of all anti-inflammatory supplements Serranol of Serrapeptase has shown to be very successful in treating fibromyalgia and inflammation with no side effects.

6. Transdermal magnesium applied to the skin is the most efficient way of improving your magnesium levels without wasting the magnesium by taking it orally. It also works as a detox agent -ridding the body of certain metals .It also helps to raise your DHEA levels.

7. Being exposed to sunlight helps the body produce vitamin D which is essential in helping combat fibromyalgia

Research indicates fibromyalgia patients are deficient in certain Vitamins like:A, E and D, as well as Magnesium, Acetyl-L-carnitine, (this naturally produced amino acid in the body helps the body produce energy. It is important for heart and brain function, muscle movement, and many other body processes.) CQ10

These last two items will help replace Vitamin D and several minerals straight back.

Taking measures to supply the body with proper nutrition and enhancing the body's communication through both hormonal and neurotransmitter balance will result in optimal outcomes in the management of fibromyalgia. In fact many have had tremendous success following this regime an eliminating fibromyalgia completely.

The choice is up to you what you do with this
