Irritable Bowel Syndrome, IBS, is characterised by chronic addominal pain, discomfort, bloating, and alteration of bowelhabits. It has no known cause and there is no cure, however there are treatments available to relieve symptoms, including dietary adjustments and perscription drugs and more significantly alternative treatments.
Several conditions may present as Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome, IBS including coeliac disease, mild infections, water borne parasite infections like giardia, inflammatory bowel disease, mal-absorption, chronic constipation, aberrant intestinal bacteria and chronic abdominal pain.
Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome,IBS has been suggested by researchers as a possible disorder of the interaction between the brain and the intestinal tract which could trigger abnormalities in the gut flora and the immune system.
There has been the suggestion of a link between children with autism who tend to suffer from severe gastrointestinal problems. Such symptoms may be due to a disruption of the indigenous gut flora promoting the overgrowth of potentially pathogenic micro-organisms which may trigger an immune response gone haywire.
Signs and symptoms
In some individuals,Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome,IBS may cause: fever, vomiting, diarrhea, or constipation
In some cases, relief may be bowel movements which have urgency, a feeling of incomplete evacuation and bloating. Other symptoms may include: fibromyalgia, chronic, headache, back ache, depression and anxiety. Some studies indicate up to 60% of persons with IBS also suffer some form of anxiety or depression.
The risk of developing Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome,IBSincreases dramatically following an acute gastrointestinal infection. Some researchers believe IBS is the result of increase in cultures of bacteria from the small intestine.
This could be from a range of unrecognised organisms or the presence of: Guardia or other similar organisms which produce symptoms of abdominal pain, constipation and diarrhea in patients.
Researchers suggest Irritable-Bowel-Syndrom,IBS and IBD (inflammatory bowel disease) are interrelated diseases, noting that patients with IBD nearly always experience Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome,IBS.
There is inflammation in joints with arthritis, inflammation in arteries with damage due to stress like smoking or alcohol and there is inflammation in different parts of the body at different times because of similar damage causing influences.
Here is a letter written by a surgeon who completely agrees with this theory Read more...........
It therefore stands to reason these damaging influences may cause good bacteria levels to be affected adversely and the intestinal area to become inflamed.
When inflammation occurs, normal organ function is impaired and can set off a chain reaction in chemicals to try and correct the problem in the body which could also cause inflamed bowel disease (IBD).
Think of your finger if you get a thorn in it -it swells up to protect the body by fighting off infection and to correct the damaging influence. If that thorn is not removed what happens to your finger? This is an acute inflammation.
Well that "thorn" is similar to an inflammation in your gut except its more likely a chronic inflammation.
When this balance is upset by a damaging influence it will enevitably destabilise this equilibrium and can cause chronic inflammation to occur. And sometimes it can go on for years unbeknown to the sufferer.
This inflammation can be related to include gastrointestinal infections, lactose interolerance, and coeliac disease are two examples of this.
Reduction of fructose and fructan has been shown to reduce IBS symptoms.
Antacids may temporarily relieve the abdominal inflammation and pain of ulcers of the stomach or duodenum because both food and antacids neutralize (counter) the acid that is responsible for irritating the ulcers and causing the pain and inflammation. However this is treating the symptom not the cause.
Testing for IBS
Apart from the obvious symptoms suggested a set of blood tests, liver function tests, serological testing for coeliac disease including abdominal ultrasound , endoscopy and biopsies to exclude rather than diagnose other illnesses.
The influence of certain drugs can also cause Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome, IBS.Coeliac disease in particular is often misdiagnosed as IBS.
Medications may consist of laxatives , antidiarrheal and certain drugs to inhibit serotonin production in the gut, anti-spasmodic drugs to help with cramping and anti bloating.
Certain minerals such as magnesium and aluminium can be effective in improving irritable bowel syndrome.
The brain-gut interaction is gaining increasing research attention. This makes sense because people over-stressed produce more adrenalin which leads to more acidity in the stomach. Relaxation therapy has also been found to be helpful coupled with exercise at least 30 minutes of strenuous exercise 5 times a week is recommended.

Due to often unsatisfactory results from many orthodox medical treatments for IBS up to 50 percent of people turn to complementary alternative medicines.
Peppermint oil .There is evidence of peppermint oil can have a beneficial effect in all irritable bowel syndrome patients.
Iberogast: This multi-herbal extract is found to be also effective in alleviating abdominal pain.
Cannabis, Kiwifruit, Mukul Myrrh Tree, Psyllium seed husks are also effective howver there is limited evidence for the effectiveness of many herbal remedies for irritable bowel syndrome.
The overall essence of many complaints is the resulting inflammation due to the damaging influence.
By removing or eliminating this inflammation by either removing the "thorn" or lowering the inflammation by way of an anti-inflammatory agent we mitigate the damage of chronic or short term inflammation.
The Miracle Enzyme or serrapepptase has proven to be a very effective in treating chronic inflammation of Irritable-Bowel-Syndrome, IBS .
